Installing a water feature in Colorado is fundamentally different from doing so at lower elevations or in more temperate climates. Every pond we build reaches a minimum depth of three feet, which provides a thermal refuge zone that keeps koi and goldfish safe even when surface ice forms during January cold snaps.
For pondless waterfall systems, we construct underground reservoirs lined with heavy-duty 45-mil EPDM rubber and filled with high-density matrix blocks that maximize water storage while supporting decorative stone above. These systems are especially popular among Denver homeowners who want the beauty and sound of flowing water without the maintenance commitment of a full pond ecosystem.
Evaporation management is critical at altitude. During July and August, an unchecked water feature can lose several inches of water per week. We install electronic auto-fill valves connected to your home's water supply, along with strategic plantings of native grasses and shrubs around the feature's perimeter that create a microclimate to reduce wind exposure and slow evaporation. Clients in Lakewood, Arvada, and Boulder have found that a well-designed water feature actually uses less water than the equivalent area of traditional bluegrass lawn.
We also offer full-service winterization and spring startup maintenance. Each fall, our crew prepares your feature for cold weather by adjusting pump flow rates, installing pond heaters or aerators where needed, and netting ponds to prevent leaf accumulation. In spring, we clean filters, inspect liners, balance water chemistry, and restart fountains so your feature is ready the moment warm weather returns.
